A woman’s body experiences several hormonal and physiological changes as it goes through different phases of life including puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. While these are physiological changes, several pathological hormonal changes such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and thyroid disorders are also more prevalent in women. Additionally, women use hormonal birth control methods that further increase the risk of hormonal disorders. These are the reasons why the female body requires extra care and support through methods that do not interfere with the body’s natural processes.
Women can greatly benefit from alternative medicine techniques including osteopathy and exercise-based interventions. Osteopathy entails a holistic approach toward musculoskeletal disorders by using mechanical techniques that help restore the normal structure and function of the musculoskeletal system. Our highly qualified osteopath, Dr. Karim El Arabi, has a thorough knowledge of the body’s organs, muscles, joints, ligaments, and connective tissues, and how they work together in harmony to ensure the smooth functioning of the body. Osteopathy can help with multiple issues specific to women as discussed below.
During menstruation, a number of women experience period pain (dysmenorrhea) which is mainly due to pelvic congestion caused by the decreased blood supply to the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus that sheds during menstruation). According to a study, the prevalence of dysmenorrhea is very high, with 72.7% of female students suffering from it. It is thus an extremely common condition, experienced every month by billions of women around the world. An osteopath can help relieve dysmenorrhea by increasing the blood supply to the uterus. They do this by ensuring the diaphragm (a respiratory muscle) works properly as it controls the arterial and venous function and also helps in the proper functioning of organs, including the heart.
While pregnancy is a beautiful and memorable experience in a woman’s life, it is also very challenging for the body. Postural changes along with hormonal changes and the extra strain on the body due to the baby’s increasing weight can put immense pressure on the woman’s body.
An osteopath can help address multiple common issues experienced during pregnancy including but not limited to
Labour and delivery are not only excruciatingly painful but they can also lead to permanent structural damage to the body. Manual Osteopathy helps with labor by keeping the pelvic structures balanced and creating a smooth birthing experience for both the mother and the baby.
Due to the hormones released during delivery such as relaxin, that cause laxity of the joints, particularly those of the pelvis, postpartum postural changes are something all women experience. These postural changes can be reversed with the help of an experienced osteopath.
Osteopaths also help manage pain related to other problems affecting women’s health such as osteoarthritis, urinary tract infections, bladder dysfunction, frozen shoulder, autoimmune diseases (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Grave’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis), and more.

The process of birth is stressful not only for the mother but also for the baby. During delivery, the infant experiences the force of pressure and their soft, malleable skull undergoes molding and twisting throughout the force of contractions.
Compression during the process of birth causes soft bones to overlap, this overlapping is relieved spontaneously when the baby suckles or cries but with a difficult birth, such as that with forceps, cesarean section, or prolonged labor, the process may not go on as it should. Pediatric osteopathy involves treating problems associated with cranial compression and more.
Our team treats the infant by keeping the patient on follow-up shortly after delivery and ensuring everything is fine through a detailed checkup.
Our osteopath, Dr. Karim, is qualified to treat patients of all age groups including infants and babies. The treatment involves a variety of techniques such as physical manipulation, stretching and mobilization, and other gentle techniques involving the cranium. Cranial techniques are much safer, gentler, and non-manipulative. These techniques release pressure and balance areas of physical tension and help soothe and relax the muscles that get tightened by pressure.
As for infants, we use gentler techniques with children as well. Depending upon the cause of the issue, in addition to the in-clinic treatment, our osteopath will suggest exercises to practice at home and will keep the patient on follow-up.
Moreover, we may refer your child to GP and other specialists if we feel that is the best treatment plan for them.
